re: Romani calendar 2007
latscho diwes!

The three open caves of Gypsy Culture in Granada 24. 11. 2006 It’s said that people are hostile to what they don’t understand, or in some cases simply what they do not know. For many it’s the origin of racialism and perhaps over the years it could be the reason why Gypsies have been marginalised in Spain. Therefore any initiative to help open up the mysteries of the Calé community in Spain must be congratulated. Sometimes the opening up comes from inside the community itself. At the start of the nineties a group of Gypsy women from Granada formed themselves into an association called Romi. One of their main goals has been to set up a museum to explain the culture of the Gypsey woman, and now that goal has been achieved. Three caves in the Sacromonte area of Granada now hold the very first museum to ‘La Gitana’ in Spain. Help from the regional government in the form of a 350,000 € grant has set up the centre, and the Mayor of Granada, José Torres Hurtado, has said that he hopes the centre will become a new tourist attraction for the city. The first cave looks at the history of how the gypsies left India and were subjected to particular laws under the Catholic Kings here in Spain. For example a law in 1499 condemned them to a lifetime of slavery. In the 1800’s they were still forbidden to speak in Caló or even wear their traditional dress. The second cave concentrates on the activities of the women’s group itself and looks at famous gypsies from history. You may be surprised to see references to Charlie Chaplin and Elvis Presley here. The third cave has details of traditional gypsy health remedies handed down through the generations. We send our congratulations to the Director of the Romi Association of Gypsey women in Granada, Loli Fernandez.

Stop !!
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen's! Recently in Belarus fascists became more active. The nationalist organization "White Power" shows extreme aggression against representatives of Roma people. Activists from "White Power" stick the leaflets calling for violention actions against Roma, living in Belarus. The "White Power" spends actions, demonstrations against Roma. The actions "White Power" calls citizens of Belarus to expel Roma from territo ry of Belarus, calls for physical violence against Roma. Belarusian Roma Lawyers Group has addressed the official complaint to Committee on affairs of Religion and Nationalities. Our complaint has been transferred in Office of Public Prosecutor of Belarus. Soon we have received the answer from Office of Public Prosecutor. The Office of Public Prosecutor of Belarus refuses start of criminal prosecution against active workers of "White Power". Actually the information who represents interests o f the organization "White Power" who supervises over this organization, is not secret. "White Power" officially declares carrying out action against Roma and receives permissions from the Belarus authorities. Names of this people can be established very easy. Today the Office of Public Prosecutor has simply ignored our complaint. Its reflection how the authority in Belarus attitude to Roma. Displays of Antigypsism are still unpunished. Belarus - in which the authority does not respect right of national minorities. Fascism can be destroyed with wide Roma civil movement by society based on principles of equality, freedom and social justice in which there is no place to interethnic enmity and xenophobia. We call everyone who does not wish to see neo-Nazis in streets of our cities, who does not agree to observe silently of fascists behavior, who does not agree with mass violations of human rights, please, right letter to President Belarus. In this letter ask Lukashenko to pay attention for Roma and ban of fascists movement. We ask all Roma and not Roma organizations to make the protest against cases Antigypsism in Belarus. The letters I ask to send to address: The President of Belarus Lukashenko Alexander Marx's street 38 220016 Minsk Belarus Together we are strong! Nickolai Kalinin niko7777@... New year 2007...
22/12/2006 Kali & Romani Calendar 2007 This is the first page of the calendar. To obtain a free copy of the entire calendar, go to www.geocities.com/daveauss Kali and Shiva It was a strange coincidence when I met Sharma, who owned an Indian restaurant called Mr Tandoor next door to our Sintezza's Gypsy Cafe, as he had a large painting of Shiva hanging on his restaurant wall and we had a small statue of Kali on the shelf. I learned a bit from Sharma about Shiva and he was always wanting to know what made me and other Romanies believe in Kali. He was fascinated with the fact that after a thousand years, Romanies still carry with them a Hindu goddess. We became friends with Sharma and talked to each other about our different cultures and how there are still similarities. Like with the language, some words are still the same, like bibi for aunt, kako for uncle, or ava for yes and nai for no or miri phen my sister. Also shamen, we use the same name for psychic healer. Sharma felt sad when he saw that the public didn't want to understand Romanies and read our literature. He saw that we had plenty of literature in the cafe, but only a few would be open to the wisdom of the Romanies. Sharma came often and read the literature and learned. He was there every day until we had to close because of lack of acceptance by the ignorant public. There just wasn't enough support to keep the cafe open. Sharma closed his restaurant after we left and went back to Punjab maybe counting himself lucky that he still had his homeland and sad for us because we didn't have a land of our own. The desire to shed blood to claim a homeland like other cultures did wasn't in us. Instead, we feel the need to live in peace with nature, love our families, listen to the wisdom of the old ones, carry on using our education for the good to help the others and respect the earth and what's put on it, not try to destroy it. It can only prove that we see further and are a wonderful culture that has been misunderstood for far too long. This Calendar is for anyone who wants to see beyond and let the positive energies guide them in the right direction, to see the truth and be in peace with us and for Romanies to help us openly celebrate our culture every day in the months of the whole year. I hope for us to rise together as one strong none territorial nation and wish that the year 2007 be the year of success and to make us one in mind. Yvonne (Vonnie)
