The first ascent of Kili succeeded in 1889. On 6th of October in 1889 the german geographer Dr. Hans Meyer and the Austrian Alpinist Ludwig Purtscheller reached the highest point of the edge of the caldera and named her “Kaiser-Wilhelm-Spitze”- “The Kiel ship top”. Because of the Independence of Tansania in 1961 it was renamed in “Uhuru Peak”.
The volcano-massif consists of 3 interlinked Strato-Volcanoes: Shira (3962 m), Mawenzi – “der Dunkle” (the Dark) (5.148 m) and Kibo – “der Helle” (the Bright)(5.895 m). Every one of the Volcanoes contributes to one peak of the Kili, whereby the Kibo is the highest of them. In addition there are more than 250 adventitious cones. Kibo is not an unlited, but a dormant volcano. From the earth`s interior of the caldera there come up vapors of sulfur. However, an eruption in near future is not expect.
